Accommodations ~
Matangi Private Island Resort features some of the most elaborate
and individually unique accommodation in Fiji. Inspired by the authentic
Fijian and Polynesian style of home, our 7 Beachfront Bures, 3 Tree
House Bures and 2 Island Bures are all built from natural local
materials including bamboo, coconut palm thatch and local hardwoods.
With high ceilings, which act as a natural air-conditioner and cool
tiled floors, our bures have been designed for absolute comfort to cope
with our tropical climate. Whilst visually appeasing in design, all
bures feature modern day luxuries including 24 hour electricity, hot
water, ample 240-volt power outlets and high quality beds and linen.
We do not offer televisions, telephones or air-conditioning to retain an
uncluttered atmosphere free of modern distractions, although telephone
and email services are available from our reception. Fresh drinking
water on the island is provided free of charge at all times, and your
bure is stocked daily. We recommend that you drink only the water
provided in your mini bar, as our tap water is not of drinking quality.
Each bure is unique and sits approximately 20 metres from our beach’s
high water mark. All bures are generously spaced ensuring ample privacy
within lush tropical gardens yet all the resort's facilities are in easy
walking distance. You won't be bothered by any motorised vehicles other
than a small tractor, which is used occasionally by our garden keepers.
Matangi offers a truly relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. All bures
feature spacious sleeping and living areas, king size bed, day bed,
ceiling fans, mini bar, ensuite bathroom facilities and private veranda.
We strive to provide an impeccable service so you can unwind and be
pampered - your maid will service your bure daily, launder your clothes,
replenish your towel supply and turn down your sheets at night. |

Recreation ~
Matangi Private Island Resort offers a wonderful variety of activities
including snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing,
water-skiing, light tackle sport fishing, hiking, private beach
excursions, a half day trip to the Bouma Waterfalls on the island of
Taveuni, a village tour on the island of Qamea and day trips to Taveuni
Island. Our staff maintain a daily activities board - just write in your
name on the board at the activities centre indicating the day, time and
activity you want and our staff will have everything in place for you.
All activities (except for scuba diving, water skiing, light tackle
sport fishing, day excursions and spa) are free of charge with all of
the required gear provided. For more information on scuba diving,
fishing, village visits and our Taveuni day tour, please take a look at
the dedicated pages on this site.
Snorkelling equipment is provided free of charge and can be done right
off the resort’s beach which is also a popular scuba diving spot.
Horseshoe Bay at the back end of our island offers exceptional
snorkelling in calm turquoise waters. We can also arrange snorkelling
trips to selected reefs off the island.
Matangi Private Island Resort is protected within a large reef system
making kayaking around the island easy and safe. We have sea-kayaks on
the island which are yours to use at your leisure. Matangi boasts
stunning sea cliffs which are part of a collapsed volcanic crater and
these are spectacular when viewed close up from the sea.
Horseshoe Bay also boasts a secluded picture-perfect white sand beach
backed by tropical forest and steep cliffs offering the most romantic
stopover. It takes just 1 hour to kayak all the way around Matangi and
less than half an hour to Horseshoe Bay. Qamea Island, which lies just a
mile off our resort, is another exceptional kayaking trip. Qamea has
lots of small coves, large bays and sandy beaches to explore and takes
about half an hour to cross to. If you want to explore these areas but
are not comfortable on a kayak, one of our staff will take you there in
our outboard powered skiff.
Windsurfing and sailing are also available at no extra charge and can be
used to explore the island or ride the winds that channel through the
Tasman Strait between our island and adjacent Qamea Island. Water-skiing
is available at an additional charge.
Matangi offers two exceptional hiking trails. A steep climb from the
resort takes you to the summit of Matangi where you can look down into
spectacular Horseshoe Bay. You can then walk through light tropical
rainforest along the crater rim for great views across the sea and
towards the islands of Qamea and Laucala. Large volcanic rocks line this
rim with steep drops either side to give you a unique perspective of
what a volcanic crater looks like.
Take time to listen to the birds and if you are patient, you'll spot
orange doves, honeyeaters and other tropical birds. This trail leads
down to our coastal walk around the south eastern side of the island,
through our old coconut plantation where cows, goats, pigs and horses
remain. The coastal walk passes alongside several sand beaches and
offers lovely coastal views. |

Days Trips ~
Taveuni Island is the third largest island in Fiji and is known as the
Garden Island for its lush tropical rain forest, endemic bird life and
beautiful National Parks. The most breathtaking scenery on Taveuni is
along its east coast, which Matangi lies off, and the boat ride from our
island takes just 30-minutes.
Our weekly trip to Tavoro Falls in the Bouma National Heritage Park is
complimentary, but there is an entrance fee payable to the Park
Administration of FJ$8.00 per adult and FJ$4.00 per child with funds
going to the up-keep and continued protection of the island's valuable
natural resources. Tavoro Falls is a series of three large waterfalls
hidden in tropical forest. The first waterfall is a 10-minute walk from
the park entrance and offers swimming and great photographic
opportunities.
The second falls is a 30-minute hike along a maintained trail with
spectacular views of the coast and offshore island's. The final falls is
another 40-minute hike although this trail is more strenuous and rugged
and is not on our standard itinerary. Matangi staff members will
accompany you to serve you lunch and afternoon tea. Take good walking
shoes and plenty of film.
On the north-east coast of Taveuni is the stunning Lavena Coastal Walk,
also within the Bouma National Heritage Park. The hike starts at
picturesque Lavena Village with its sweeping white sand beach and
continues along a maintained trail for 3-miles along a secluded
uninhabited coastline passing small cove beaches, waterfalls, river
crossings and wonderful coastal scenery.
A guide at Lavena is available for hire and it’s possible to kayak in
one direction and walk back the other. Our staff at Matangi will arrange
for boat transfers to Taveuni and taxi transfers to Lavena at our
standard rates.
Also on Taveuni's north-east coast is Vunivasa Estate's Waibula Guided
Cultural Tour. This is a four hour guided tour of a working plantation
that will also take you to the site of an ancient Fijian fort in the
high country, from where you can enjoy stunning views of the Tasman
Straits, Qamea and Matangi islands and beyond. A hiking trail will take
you into a valley and along a meandering river through the ruins of an
ancient Fijian village and burial ground before ending at a waterfall
where you can enjoy your packed lunch and a swim amidst dense tropical
rainforest surroundings.
Your Fiji holiday would not be complete without a visit to a traditional
Fijian village. Time and time again our guests come back from the
village praising this as their unique memory of Fiji. This trip takes
you by boat to a secluded village on the neighbouring island of Qamea.
At the village beach you are greeted by the local hosts for a stroll
through the village and then taken to the village hall to meet the chief
and his people. Join them for some kava (Fiji’s national drink) and
enjoy songs and traditional dances performed especially for you. This is
a great opportunity to share some stories with the locals, learn and
experience Fijian culture and take some wonderful photographs. As a
return gesture, the Matangi Private Island Resort office organises a
token monetary contribution from guests to assist the village in its
community projects, such as maintenance to school buildings and church
affairs. |
Fishing
~ One of the unexpected pleasures of Matangi Private Island
Resort is its exceptional fishing conditions and almost guaranteed
year-round fishing whatever the weather. Surrounded by an intricate
pattern of fringing and open-water reefs, including the 25-mile Laucala
and Qamea Reefs, all with exceptionally rich sea currents, we are able
to fish all year-round for large game like Tuna, Mahimahi and Spanish
Mackerel, with Sailfish appearing in the summer months only. Smaller
reef fish including year-round Coral Trout, Giant Trevally, Large Long
Toms, Barracuda and Reef Snapper are always biting in and around the
lagoons. All provide exceptional sport for the light tackle or fly
angler.
Fishing is offered from our 25-foot open craft, of robust design, with
fast outboard motor, which can be hired for a reasonable hourly charge.
Big game are best caught by casting into the fringing reefs and reeling
in using poppers. In certain weather conditions, tides and seasons, we
troll the open water offshore from Matangi for larger fish. A variety of
light tackle is used including spinning reels for casting for the reef
fish and 30-pound class trolling reels.
With the boat comes a fun-loving Fijian captain whose knowledge of the
reefs and fish is inherited from youth and fine-tuned with experience.
Rods, lures and tackle for trolling and bottom fishing are all provided
by Matangi but it is recommended that the serious sports anglers bring
their own equipment to suit their personal skills. A suitable selection
of gear would include 15kg trolling rod and reel, fixed spool reel with
suitable rod for casting to reef fish (this should be of robust size
with good capacity as many of these fish, including Giant Trevally are
of impressive size).
A light spinning rod and reel should be included as many small species
are often caught from the beach in front of your bure including Blue Fin
Trevally, a great fighter on light tackle or fly.
Fly fishing enthusiasts will find the beach close to your bure is ideal
for fly-casting with plenty of room to back-cast with sufficient depth
of water in front of you on the high tide. There is no fly-fishing gear
available on the island so bring your own. A weight 6 is the lightest
gear suitable for beach fishing but a weight 9 to weight 12 is required
when fishing the offshore reefs. Floating or intermediate lines are
mainly used as the coral can play havoc with sinking lines. |
Scuba
Diving ~ Matangi Private Island Resort is the most centrally
located of all the Northern resorts to the exceptional scuba diving
sites which Fiji is famous for. Within a 20-mile radius of Matangi
Island are countless dive sites including the world famous Great White

Your guides will provide you with a thorough briefing before each dive
and will be in the water with you at all times to assist and ensure
that your dive is safe and enjoyable.
Dive Programme
Upon arrival at Matangi, the Dive staff will explain the dive programme.
You will be required to produce your dive certification card for
registration at the activities / dive centre. Our staff will provide you
with a personal catch bag to store your dive equipment. Dive gear is
available for hire.
Dive sites are selected according to the day’s tidal movements and

before a second tank dive. The dive boat usually returns to Matangi

and cookies are provided on the dive boat.

dive boat will not drop anchor on any of the dive sites, it is important
to follow the guide to ensure your safe return to the boat.
In the event of an emergency where specialised treatment and
recompression is required, a recompression facility is available in
Suva, Fiji’s capital, a 55-minutes flight from Taveuni Island. Please
note that you are responsible to meet the cost of this flight and
recompression treatment which can cost up to F$15,000. It is recommended
that your travel insurance includes cover for scuba diving.
Please note that dives are not permitted within 24-hours of flying to /
from Matangi Island.

daily dive rate includes 2-tank morning dives before returning to

FAQ's ~
Air Travel
Fiji's national carrier, Air Pacific, offers regular flights between
Fiji and 13 major cities including Los Angeles, Honolulu, Toronto,
Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland, Christchurch and
Tokyo. Fiji's international airport is situated in the town of Nadi, on
the Western Coast of Viti Levu. Access to outer islands like Matangi
require additional but short transfers by air and sea.
Matangi's neighbour, Taveuni Island, is serviced by two Fiji airlines,
Sun Air and Air Fiji, with regularly scheduled flights from Nadi and
Suva, the two major international airports in Fiji. Both Fiji airlines
operate daily services with a flight time of approximately ninety
minutes from Nadi. Domestic Fiji air flights are a grand opportunity to
view the majestic islands of Fiji, and see the extensive coral reef

Domestic Fiji flights can be coordinated with international flights and
can be arranged through Matangi Private Island Resort or your travel
agent. We coordinate transfers from the Matei airport on Taveuni Island
to Matangi Island.
A mini-bus will meet you at the Taveuni airport, and will take you on a
scenic, 20-minute drive to the boat landing, where one of our boats will
meet you. This is a wet landing, so please be prepared to wade to the
boat. The water taxi takes about 20 minutes to get to the resort.

Fiji Weather & Dress
The Fiji weather is tropical and the resort is relaxed and casual. Pack
light, as casual clothing is the dress code for the resort. Some guests
prefer to dress up a bit for dinner, but Matangi is very casual, and
Fiji resort wear or beach resort wear is appropriate at all times. In
the winter months from June-October the Fiji weather can be cool on some
evenings, you may want to bring a windbreaker and a pair of long pants.
We stock a limited supply of toiletries, casual designer fashions, film,
batteries, various pharmaceutical items and gifts in our boutique. There
is no other shopping on the island, so be sure to pack
any special items you require. See below for weather button to the
nearest weather reporting station to Matangi Island.
Matangi Island enjoys a sub-tropical climate. Rainfall is usually around
2250 mm or 90 inches per year. Most of this occurs in the late
afternoons and evenings during the summer months between October -
April, when we receive generally light and variable winds (north-east)
and long spells of no wind and calm seas. In the cooler winter months
between May - September we experience south-east trade winds (varying
from 10 - 20 knots) and occasional trade showers. The sun sets between
6.00pm and 6.30pm winter to summer and rises from 5.30am to 6.00am.
