Homestay In Levuka
A new concept in accommodation for Levuka is now open. The
construction of your home-away-from-home has been quite a feat, but
the finished product has been worth it (see the "News" page for an
idea of what it took to build this beautiful home). All photos on
this website have captions - just position your mouse pointer on
each photo for a description. |

The Owners
Bula from John and Marilyn Milesi. We first discovered Fiji in 1984
(it was our first overseas trip) and we have been coming back here
from Perth in Western Australia every year since then. In 1999, we
made a decision to come to Fiji with the intention of settling down
here. Over a period of six months we travelled around the country,
looking for somewhere we could call 'home'. We were fortunate to
find Levuka, the original capital of Fiji. We fell in love with this
small town the moment we stepped off the airport bus. The people in
our community here are very welcoming and we had no hesitation in
deciding to find a block of land on which to build our home. |
 |
 |
 |
We were very lucky to
find this vacant block of land just three minutes walk from the
centre of town. Having purchased the land, we went back to Perth and
sold our home, put all of our affairs in order and returned to
Levuka to set about building our dream home.
The timing of our arrival could have been better as the country
experienced political problems not long after our arrival. But we
came here 'for better or for worse' and are now involved in helping
to rebuild our adopted country.
Your Home-away-from-home
In building our home, we have designed it in the colonial style, in
keeping with the general architecture of the town of Levuka. It is
constructed of wood, using pine posts for support. Inside is
decorated with Fijian artifacts and handicrafts. Our aim is to
capture both the 'colonial' and the 'Fijian' themes that are so much
part of the heritage of this town.
We have four rooms for guests - three air-conditioned rooms with
queen size beds, and one room with a double bed and single bed. Your
room is spacious, with polished floors, ceiling fan, refrigerator,
ensuite bathroom, outside veranda and your own private entrance. Tea
and coffee making facilities are also available in each room.
|
 |
 |
 |
|
You can relax on the
covered deck in the lower part of the house or enjoy the fresh air
in the privacy of our garden. You are also most welcome to enjoy the
view from the upper deck, or watch a video or read a good book in
the comfort of our lounge room. |
|
 |
 |
|
A full breakfast is
provided as part of the tariff - freshly made fruit juice, local
fruit, Marilyn's special muesli, a cooked breakfast, fresh tea or
brewed coffee. This should start your day off well, ready to enjoy
your day's exploration of Levuka. |

Things to do |
 |
|
Are you feeling
energetic? Or maybe you feel like a relaxing stroll through town. In
Levuka, we try to cater for whatever mood you happen to be in, so
that you can make the most of your stay in our lovely frontier town. |
 |
Below are some
suggestions for you to ponder:
- Take a leisurely stroll through town, walk to a nearby waterfall,
go for a hike - for any walking activities, spend some time with Nox.
He is very proud of his island and is keen to share his knowledge of
the history of the island and many other interesting facts. When he
is not doing his walking tours, he spends his time looking after our
beautiful garden here at the Homestay.
- For a village experience with a difference, allow
Epi to
take you on his tour to his village of Lovoni, situated in the
centre of the island. You can walk or take a van, and on your way,
Epi will explain the flora, fauna and history of Ovalau. You will
follow in the footsteps of the old Fiji warriors and see the places
where they rested before raiding the town.
- Or just visit a local village and experience the way Fijians live
today. It is a mixture of the traditional and the modern ways of
life. |
 |
- Feel like doing something in the water.
Ovalau Watersports
offer open water diving instruction, reef diving, snorkelling,
kayaking and fishing trips.
- Interested in sports? On offer are lawn bowling, rugby, soccer,
hockey, billiards and pool, and squash.
- How about afternoon tea with some local identities? 'Tea & Talanoa'
enables you to spend time in the home of Duncan, a Scot who has
lived for many years in Levuka and has some great stories to tell.
Enjoy his beautiful garden or have your photo taken with one of his
iguanas. Or you can spend time with Bubu Kara, a Fijian grandmother
who can tell you what it was like to live here in "the good old
days". |
 |
|
- How about a trip
to a small tropical island? A day trip to nearby Caqalai Island can
be arranged for you. |
 |
There
are photographic opportunities everywhere. Whether it be an old
building or the local kids swimming at Market Bridge, always have
your camera ready for that special reminder of your stay in Levuka.
- Hungry or thirsty? There are a number of restaurants in Levuka that
cater for the whole range of tastes, from European food, to Chinese
food, to local Fijian food and to Indian food. Quench your thirst
with a cold beer or wine or spirits, freshly made fruit juice,
cappucino, and so on.
|
 |
|
Your stay in Levuka
can be as busy or as relaxed as you want it to be. As soon as you
arrive, the special ambiance of Levuka will become evident and we
hope you will be eager to experience as much as possible during your
stay. |

Sun.
Don't
want to fly - then take a bus (about a four hour trip), which can be
booked at the ATS office at Nadi Airport. Or take a taxi, which we
can arrange for you.
Once
you are in Suva, next stop is Levuka.
Air Fiji

on Sunday afternoon (at 5.00pm) from Nausori (Suva) Airport. You
arrive at Bureta Airport and then proceed on a 40 minute trip to

return trip to Suva, the bus departs Levuka at 4.30am.
While you are here
Most of the time you will find yourself walking around, but if you
feel like travelling further afield, there are taxis and local
'carriers' for hire at very reasonable rates. |

THE CRUISE OPTION
Captain Cook Cruises, who are based at Denarau in Nadi, are running
six (6) Dateline Cruises this year on the MV Reef Escape.
This cruise leaves Nadi and two nights later arrives in Levuka. It
then takes another five nights to cruise back to Nadi.
So why not combine a cruise one way and conventional transport the
other.
2008 Departure dates
from Nadi:
Tuesday May 13
Tuesday June 3
Tuesday July 1
Tuesday August 5
Tuesday September 2
Tuesday October 7

and most major credit cards are exchanged and accepted at the banks. It

An Automatic Teller Machine has now been installed at the Westpac Bank.
It accepts Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Plus and Cirrus cards.

SHOPPING
If you want duty free shopping, sorry, we can't help. Shopping in Levuka
is more an experience not to be missed. Our shops cater mainly for the
local people of Ovalau and neighbouring islands. But you can still buy
souvenirs, post cards, T-shirts, caps, sulus, watches etc. There is no
hassle when you enter any of the shops - it becomes more of a social
event, an excuse to meet people and make new friends. |
POST & COMMUNICATIONS
Postal services in Fiji are very efficient and relatively cheap. If you
make any large purchases here, why not mail them home, rather than worry
about carrying them with you on your travels?
Phone and fax facilities are also available at the Post Office.
Internet services are also available in town, so you can keep in touch
with family and friends back home.
MEDICAL FACILITIES
There are no private doctor's practices in Levuka. The Levuka Hospital
outpatient department provides casual and emergency services. There is
no optician service, but basic dentistry is available. Serious emergency
cases are transferred to Suva by helicopter, if necessary. Some
pharmaceutical products are available at the hospital and from stores in
town.
CUSTOMS CLEARANCE
Levuka is a port of entry into Fiji and clearance for yachts and boats
is easily arranged during normal working hours - call ahead if entering
harbour after normal hours. Bunkering, watering facilities and ships'
supplies are available. Our Customs House is located alongside the main
wharf and is the oldest Customs building in Fiji.
CHURCHES
Levuka has a number of churches, including Methodist, Anglican,
Catholic, Assemblies of God, Seventh Day Adventists, Church of Jesus
Christ of the Latter Day Saints, Jehovah's Witness, Hindu and Muslim.
